CONTEXT AND BACKGROUND

Under the high patronage of H.E. Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, the Ministry of Investment and International Cooperation (MIIC) is organizing the fourth edition of the Africa 2019: Investment for Africa Forum on the 22nd and 23rd of November 2019 at Cairo’s New Capital. Egypt’s New Capital is an Egyptian national landmark demonstrating African capacity to bridge profound heritage with technological advancement and future prospects.

Capitalizing on the success of the 2017 and 2018 editions of the forum, this year, the Investment for Africa forum provides a unique pan African platform bringing together African heads of state and governments in inclusive interaction with prominent regional and international investors, as well as international financial institutions (IFIs).

Africa 2019: Investment for Africa confirms Egypt’s commitment to the African Development Agenda 2063, which aims at leveraging our capacities and expertise to realize tangible development results, achieve inclusive and sustainable economic growth and boost shared prosperity with the ultimate objective of meeting the aspirations of the African people.

As Egypt presides over the African Union in 2019, President Al-Sisi’s grand vision for Africa emphasizes the urgency of putting Africa on the global investment map, strengthening the frameworks of multilateral cooperation, and engaging private sector actors into Africa’s inclusive and sustainable development. Significant efforts are thus underway towards developing infrastructure, promoting renewable energy, accelerating digital transformation, improving transportation, modernizing industries and investing in human capital.

In this regard, Africa 2019 Forum opens a distinctive opportunity to unify and foster development partners’ and private sector’s efforts towards achieving Africa’s development objectives through designed interactive dialogues and sessions drawn from Africa’s 2063 vision.

During the forum, business transactions will be forged through promoting and showcasing potential investment opportunities across the continent that aim at boosting shared prosperity and inclusive growth. In addition, success stories of young entrepreneurs and startups will be presented, especially that of youth and women, to attract smart global investors and contribute to wide-ranging and sustainable development of our African continent.

MAIN HIGHLIGHTS AND THEMES OF AFRICA 2019 FORUM

A high-profile Presidential roundtable session will convene on November 22nd, chaired by H.E. President Al-Sisi, to discuss Africa’s untapped investmentopportunities and joint economic cooperation aiming at boosting investment flows to Africa. Heads of State and governments will meet to exchange views on strategies and policies that ensure the higher engagement of development partners and private sector to boost Africa’s economic prosperity and growth.

The Forum’s main themes will be covered through interactive panels with renowned keynote speakers who will be highlighting the linkages between investment opportunities in Africa and achieving Sustainable Development Goals.

The selected themes are of strong relevance and interest to the African nations as well as investors. These themes are mainly:

  • Unleashing the Competitive Potential of Private Sector in Africa;
  • Mobilizing Investments for Africa’s Industrial Transformation;
  • Enhancing the Continent’s Energy, Infrastructure and Connectivity;
  • Entrepreneurship and Innovation; and
  • Investing in Human Capital;

Africa 2019: Investment for Africa Forum paves the way towards the realization of Africa’s 2063 development goals and lays the foundation for effective future economic cooperation among African nations. The Forum opens the opportunity for the African leaders to unify their efforts towards achieving the continent’s inclusive and sustainable development by serving the aspirations of the African people.

Themed Workshops

Prior to the Forum, The Government of Egypt, will organize and host two intensive themed workshop on November 20th and 21st, 2019. The first is organized by the Egyptian Ministry of Trade and Industry and entitled “Made in Africa: Mobilizing Investment for Africa’s Sustainable Industrial Development”; while the second is organized by the Ministry of Investment and International Cooperation and the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones, and is entitled “Investment Promotion Policies and FDI Trends”.

1. Investment Promotion Policies and FDI Trends

The Ministry of Investment and International Cooperation and the General Authority for Investment will organize a two-day intensive workshop in collaboration with UNCTAD, also from the 20th to 21st of November, 2019.

The main objective of this workshop is to discuss investment promotion policies and mechanisms of attracting capital inflows to utilize the continent’s vast resources and achieve self-sufficiency.

The workshop will bring together Ministries and Investment Promotion Agencies from the African Union’s countries to share knowledge and showcase their success stories. They will also discuss prospects of improving the targeting mechanism of investment promotion strategies to harness inter-African and FDI potential.

2. Made in Africa: Mobilizing Investment for Africa’s Sustainable Industrial Development

The two-day intensive workshop is organized by the Egyptian Ministry of Trade and Industry on November 20th and 21st, 2019. The main objective of this workshop is to discuss Africa as a land of opportunity, exploring various means to attract capital inflows to the continent on the account of utilizing the continent’s vast resources, achieving its self-sufficiency and contribute to its industrial transformation.

It will bring together African Ministers of Trade and Industry to explore the potential of accelerating industrial transformation in Africa, highlight areas where investments are needed, and emphasize the role of foreign direct investment in bringing new technology, knowhow and skills to the continent.
